TTX – Tabletop Exercise

What is a Tabletop Exercise (TTX)?

A tabletop exercise is a structured cybersecurity simulation conducted in a conference room or remote setting, designed to evaluate an organization’s crisis response and cybersecurity preparedness. Unlike hands-on technical simulations, TTXs are discussion-based exercises that simulate real-world cyber incidents to test decision-making processes, communication flows, and crisis management capabilities.

Rather than being executed in a physical or operational environment, tabletop exercises take place in controlled, often office-based, environments and are ideal for assessing how key stakeholders would respond during a cyber crisis scenario.

Steps in Conducting a Tabletop Exercise

Tabletop cybersecurity exercises typically follow these key steps:

  1. Scenario Definition: A realistic cyberattack scenario is created that reflects the organization’s risk profile, operational structure, and known vulnerabilities.

  2. Team Selection: A cross-functional team is assembled, typically including representatives from crisis management, IT security, and relevant business units.

  3. Scenario Briefing: The selected scenario and the objectives of the exercise are shared with all participants. Team members are briefed to ensure familiarity with the threat landscape and understand their roles during the exercise.

  4. Exercise Initiation: The exercise begins at a predefined time. Participants respond to scenario developments and practice implementing the organization’s crisis management plan.

  5. Scenario Progression: The simulated incident unfolds in real-time. Participants respond to evolving threats, attacker actions, and system impacts, while coordinating communication and response strategies.

  6. Response Evaluation: At the end of the exercise, the team assesses the effectiveness of their responses. Strengths and areas for improvement are identified.

  7. Feedback and Analysis: Participants provide feedback on how the scenario played out, including any challenges, breakdowns in coordination, or gaps in decision-making.

  8. Reporting and Improvement Planning: A comprehensive report is generated summarizing findings, weaknesses, and recommendations to enhance the organization’s incident response and crisis management processes.

Tabletop exercises are a powerful tool to strengthen cybersecurity preparedness, refine crisis management capabilities, and improve interdepartmental coordination. They allow organizations to evaluate their strategic response in a controlled environment—without disrupting day-to-day operations.

Cybersecurity Attack Simulations – Realistic Scenarios and Effective Exercises with SPARTA
